Safety valve placement

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Safety valve placement

Post by daysaver1 »

After a winter of retubing our VFT boiler, building a new feedwater pump and installing a new engine, our boat is coming back together to be running at the Siltcoos meet the second weekend of July. Our boat previously didn't have a safety valve in the feedwater line but I now want to install one and I'd like it to be placed in an un-obtrusive location. Can you tell me if a "standard" safety valve can be placed on its side? I'd like to put it under the decking (floor) but there's not enough room to mount it in a normal vertical orientation.

I have seen many "standard" safeties on their sides, and all performed as advertised. Whether or not it is a "proper" installation per manufacturer, I do not know.
