The nick is my first name.I live 20 miles south of Hamburg.
My first contact to steam was in the early seventys when the brother in law of my girlfrend organised a trip from London to Brighton on a steam lorry.This was something very impressive.
My passion over the years was hunting and motobike travelling.Ten years ago I had to give up my professionel work and the hunting because of physical restrictions.Motobike travelling was mainly riding at low speed and in short distances. Now I am 65 years old and feel i will come to a stop with motobike driving.As my motobike is a Dnepr MT 16 with a driven sidecar,I learned the advantages of low speed travelling.You always get more intense impressions compared to travelling over longer distances at higher speed.
Now I remember the passing by of a small steam boat when I had a break at a bridge at a small river..Nearly no noise and it left a smell of coal fire when it disappeared under the bridge with the chimney taken down.
So maybe steam boat travelling will be a passion to fill my years to come.I joined here to learn more about steam boats and maybe get in contact to the subject.

Yes, welcome to the forum. A few of us have traded in our motorcycles for steamboats. You can get underway on steam at very little cost, with some mechanical skills and some work. Or you can spend a larger amount and have a true classic launch. Either way you will enjoy the easy pace of travel without the rush of speed and traffic jams.

It's a very, very, small world.

And you'll find a lot of information here, presented in a very casual format.

Steamboaters in Germany are fortunate to have an active and knowledgeable group in the German Steamboat Society. Rainier (among others) can get you signed up.

Google's 15,000,000+ books online is nearing completion and the quality of the scanning isn't too bad. There are a great many steam books there. Things like "Valve-Gear" by Spangler (1914 ed) which goes into great detail and has the formulas to accurately the action.
