I've never posted pics on here but it sounds to me like your file size may be too big, and you need to shrink it a bit. On other forums I use a program called Pixrezier. It is simple and works fine, but as it's free you need to watch for, and stop, all the added 'rubbish' that it tries to carry with it.

When a pic or file is uploaded here it is generally stored on the forums' server. These forums only provide a certain amount of storage. And then of course they want the customer to pay for more typically. Most limit the bandwidth as well, or traffic to and from, exceed that, same deal.
Just post your pic somewhere on the internet, most use a file sharing site like photobucket or flickr. Then just post the link with the "Img" button at the top like this:

To copy the link for a pic elsewhere and there is no button to do so- right click on the pic and select "view image info" the link will be displayed next to "Location".
