Hi,

I don't know much at all about steam. I do however have an interest in steam engines, boilers and boats. If I live long enough these interests will all come together at the same time
From what I've seen so far there is a tremendous amount to be learned here. Maybe I'll even be able to contribute some time.

There's a vast wealth of collective knowledge on here. Ask any steam related question and I'm sure you'll receive an answer shortly.

Welcome to the board, I am in my 18th year of steam boating but have followed it with my family for most of my life, a few books you may want to purchase are Steamboats and Modern Steam Launches, Reed's Yachts and Trawlers ...both are available from Boathouse books which you can find in the website for Elliot Bay Steam Launch Company. http://www.steamlaunch.com/ another book is more of a picture book and is called "The Steam Launch"

I would also like to invite you to visit my steam launch web page at http://www.slphoebesnow.com and while you are looking around the Associations Link click on the the Icon for "The North American Steamboat Association" and print out a membership form and put me down as a referral, I get nothing from this except adding you to the membership roster and sending you a magazine every 2 months as I am a volunteer.

I first discovered "steamboating" back in 1995, back in Chicago. Read everything I could get me hands on about steamboats and steam engines, purchased my first boat knowing nothing about running them. What a fun hobby and lifelong obsession. I owned my first boat for 2.5yrs, sold her do to job loss. Back in Texas now and working on getting my next boat for almost a year now - can't wait for the day to arrive. Very close now. You'll find Steamboaters are a great group of folks; always willing to offer help and encouragement when ever you ask for it. Just the way we are! I will echo Steamdon-jr's advice, a must get is: "Steamboats and Modern Steam Launches" - this IS the "bible" for understanding the basics and preps you for understanding what is possible.

Check out The Graceful Ghost on Caddo Lake in East Texas and soon I hope to have my boat out here in W. Texas (if our lake doesn't run dry first), there are others here in Texas I'm sure. Let's get to know each other.

There are a number of subscribers to Steamboating Magazine who live in Texas and would, I think, like to "get together". I'd be willing to print a brief notice in Steamboating Magazine and also on the online "classifieds" page if someone is willing to become the coordinator. Doesn't take much: just keep a list of Texans w/their email and postal addys and telephone numbers. There has been, intermittently, a meeting in the early Spring at Caddo Lake, but I haven't heard about anything in a while. I'd be happy to also list any "meets" or "get togethers" in the calendar of the magazine and also the online calendar. I'd be happy to work with you on that Texas Steamboaters List AFTER I get me boat launched. She is going to be a tad to large to trailer to meets. Perhaps I can work on organizing a Steamboat Rally out here in the Western part of the state.
