I just thought I might point out a Youtube video that I made up. I have taken a 5x4 Troy Engberg engine and added a slip eccentric. The engine was then mounted into a 26 foot hull and put to work. This video is short..... a mix of boat....music and the engine. In all, it reflects what I seek out when I am out on the water. I hope you enjoy.

Re: Orion on a cruise
A good friend of mine from Wales, had brought the movie Fitz Caraldo to my attention. Yes the movie was an inspiration for the phonograph. I was lucky enough to get this Sonora phonograph at auction for $8.00 I now have over 1000 records and the other night, I was on the water playing some old records.... I don't have a lot in the way of videos as the engine is new to the boat and the boat has only been sea ready since September of last year. I am looking forward to Lee s Mill in Moultonborough New Hampshire in 5 weeks time. This is the meet where we separate the men from the boys.

Re: Orion on a cruise

Here is a pic of Orion on the water.
Some information on Orion.
Orion was so called in memory of Cst. Anthony Fitzgerald ORION Gordon who along with 3 other members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were shot and killed while in the performance of their duties.
Orion is a 26 foot x 8.5. foot fiberglass hull that I purchased in Batesville Arkansas. I was told the hull came from Georgia where it was supposed to become a cruiser. The hull was a bare shell.
The engine is a Troy Engberg 5x4 that I acquired locally. It was in rough shape and needed to have the crankshaft turned and new Babbitt poured. This was done and the engine runs well.
The boiler was built by Vern Leduc in 1995 in Errol New Hampshire. Sadly Vern did not see the boiler go into Orion before passing.
All other parts and pieces come from Ebay, garage sales, flea markets and the such. Never underestimate what is still out there.
A short video to follow on the engine running at Lees Mill.

Re: Orion on a cruise

As promised, here is a short video on the engine running.
Some things to note.........
Magnet on a piece of copper wire.... good for fishing out nuts and bolts from the bilge.
There is a small brass ring on the plate on the side of the engine. To be used if the delrin cog wears out on the slip eccentric.
Foot long piece of wire following the valve connecting rod is attached to a counter.
The oilers are home made wicks that divert oil to the various tubes. Works very well.
The #49673 is a reminder of Cst. Gordon. This was his badge number.
The front chain runs a teal-hypro pump. This also works very well.
Shortly after this video was taken, it was brought to my attention by and attentive captain on shore that my exhaust was not balanced in sound. Some work on the connecting rod to the piston valve resulted in a smoother operation. Exhaust was about 3 feet from camera at the time of the video.
That's it.

It's very thoughtful of you to honor the fallen RCMP officer. Were you acquainted with him in any way?
I like Troys, a friend of mine had very large one in his backyard that we'd run on the weekends and New Years.

I was not acquainted with Cst. Gordon. He and I however worked the same area of northern Alberta and dealt with the same individuals. The passing of 4 young officers was a shock to many. For myself, it was extremely difficult for the loss was that of a fellow officer but added to this was the fact that these young men were the age of my daughters. Much too young to die.

I also really like the Troy Engberg. It is a solid mass of energy. I consider myself lucky to have found a 5x4 and a hull that could take the weight. Now, I not only enjoy running a steam engine, I can also view the countryside and limitless waterways.
