Unions

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Do you know Serto from Switzerland?

You can connect and disconnect it without moving the pipes sidewards. All Swiss Steamboaters like them - because the Swiss have the Swiss Frank to pay for it ;-)
But in some places for drains or other multi line systems they are quite nice:

Have a look at the catalog here:

Thank you Rainer!

Now that I have all this information I think I will certainly look into machining my own.

In the US, Swagelok makes similar fittings "VCO" type. Swagelok is expensive, and on e-bay the prices for their compression fittings have risen to nearly wholesale prices, as so many have been searching for these fittings. But the "VCO" type fittings are relatively unknown and not wanted by most of the e-bay shoppers, so you can find these at relatively low prices on e-bay. Trolling for the fittings you want may take some time.

I do not have any vested interest in Swagelok Corp., but I have used their fittings for many years, and have never found any other brand that comes close to Swagelok quality.

Fred,
Thanks for the tip. I got a quote on new ones and it was serious money. I'm falling more and more in love with making my own anyway.

Mike,
Before you start turning a lot of brass into chips, you might look at JIC 37deg flare X NPT hydraulic fittings. http://www.discounthydraulichose.com/SA ... s_s/24.htm
Using NPTFM X 37deg M and a NPTFM X 37deg swivel to make the connections, you should be able to do safety, whistle, & gauges for under $50 if the prices listed on the site above are to be belived.

Crips!! I described exactly what I wanted to do at the local hydraulic shop and they never mentioned the female fittings. All I could think of was a short hunk of copper pipe and I wasn't that excited about hanging a couple of feet of whistle stuff out on that.

I'll have a good look at the bore with the respect to the safety valve use. For the others. it will work I'm sure.

The forum coughs up another solution.

Thanks Dave,

Mike

The hydraulic fittings look they are going to work out just right. I'm going to have to go to a 5/8" flare on the safety valve line to keep the bore the same size as a 1/2' schedule 80 pipe. And they are really inexpensive when bought on line. Less than cheap plumbing fittings at the local box store.

Thanks again Dave and all,

Mike
