Stuart 5A

Post by VANYA »

I have been offered a well mad, model engineer exhibition grade marinised Stuart 5A with feed pump, reverse gear and solid flywheel. Well machined and painted. To be used in a steamboat.

Would £1235.00 seem a fair price in the market these days.

Just interested to know as I do not live in the Uk.

Dear Hayden ,

If it is as well made and presented as you say it is then I would say that it is a good buy .
Have a look at some of the comments I and Lopez Mike made to Quinten on page two of "Steamboating for Dummies" in the "Technical-Engines and Boilers" section of this forum .

Regards Edward.

Re: Stuart 5A and castings

Edward.

I tried to post a photo but need to down size it.

Thank you for your advice.

I was also offered a set of castings for a 5A for as well and considering they are not now produced might be a good buy. Obviously these are old and from the original Stuart Co. I guess so should be better quality cast.

Should I post a link for them? I do not need them but someone else might.

Dear Hayden ,

No harm in giving a link ; as you say : someone could well be interested .
In most cases the original Stuart Turner castings were better than the later Stuart Models castings .
As I believe the firm has again been sold I'm not sure what the new owners policy will be concerning the periodic reintroduction of casting sets ; previously as demand didn't justify keeping sets in permanent production there was often a gap of many months during which sets weren't available .

Edward.

I amazes me that for a company like Stuarts, whos intergral core business is engineering involving castings, that they would not have at least one set of even the rearest model likely to be ordered on the shelf.

It is not like the cost of one set will break the bank, it just metal. There unavailability really does not promote the there customer service or reputation. Maybe it does explain there third ownership change.

Maybe there scearsity keeps the price up. Saw an ebay auction for a Stuart Sun..went for
£405 in the end.

No worries, if i were unaware of the offer I would also appreciate being notified somehow.
And there was a bidder before already, so who knows what number he will offer in the last minute.
