white stuff on pipes

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Hey Bart, you out there ??

Can you remind me of what you use to paint your insulated pipes ? I think it was some sort of roof coating.

I had to replace a section of lagging on the steam line to Medea's windlass a couple years ago. We had some sections of rigid non-asbestos pipe insulation that I fitted to the straight runs and mitered around the ells. To finish off I used 3 oz. glass cloth and lagging adhesive which can be painted when dry. Makes a clean and flexible covering for the pipework.
I can check for the name of the lagging adhesive when I get back but it was exactly like Arabol.

I have no personal experience with this product but it looks like it might have an application here (over an insulating layer)

3M Scotch Cast Plus (Description from their website)

A lightweight, strong and durable casting tape that combines the benefits of a fiberglass casting tape with the handling ease of plaster. Available in 13 colors to meet patient preferences.
Scotchcast Plus casting tape consists of a knitted fiberglass fabric impregnated with polyurethane resin. Exposure to moisture or water initiates a chemical reaction which causes the tape to become rigid. Finished casts produced from Scotchcast Plus casting tape are lightweight, strong, radiolucent, and porous. Scotchcast Plus casting tape contains a lubricating agent in the resin to provide a slippery feel when exposed to water.

Commercially available self-adhesive fiberglass wrap like this is very good stuff. If you take care you can make nice corners with just a little reinforcing tape. It can be painted as is or finished with a wrap as mentioned above and it would look just like the century-old plaster stuff. Probably has a higher R value as well.

I've seen big boxes of assorted sizes being used at construction sites, one of those would do half a dozen small steamboat plants.
