Oiler Question

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Oiler Question

Post by JonRiley56 »

All,

Ron is building me a gorgeous steam pump for the Jackie Lee. It will need to be oiled. I am also planning on oiling my engine moving forward.

I have a gorgeous big Lunkenheimer oiler that I bought a while back when I was seduced by sultry glow of the EBay screen late at night...........

Can I set the oiler up on my main steam line and then T off to my little steam pump ? I would have two valves for the pump, One in the main line and the other at the pump itself.

Thanks in advance

Jon, That should work just fine. However, the way I'm going to set this one up is take steam off right at the middle trycock. It should be automatic boiler level control. I will need to add another small oiler at the pump. From what the prints say, it is best to throttle the pump on the steam exhaust side. Which makes sense because the shuttle valve would get unreliable at low steam pressures/velocity that supply side metering would allow.

Thanks Ron,

I am trying to run my water level in the upper part of my steam drum. I guess it depends on whether I want to try and continuously feed at a measured rate matching my use to maintain a level or let the level get to the mid point and then re-fill.

I am inclined to try and balance the water in put with the steam output if I can, but I will have to be careful not to overfill, when I come off the main throttle the little pump will keep merrily pumping away......... Luckily my steam drum is set up with a steam dome on the top where my outlets are so at least I wouldnt pump a slug of water into the engine right away, although I guess if I was stuck on stupid I could fill the dome..........ouch !
