Miles per Gallon (Litre etc.)

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Wesley, can you give some details of your vaporizing burner? Drawings and/or photographs? I am considering a switch to a kerosene vaporizing burner, for the sidewheele but would like to have a reasonable starting point for my burner development. About 3/4 gallon per hour kerosene burn rate.

Another option I am considering is a propane atomized oil burner, which may prove attractive for normal cruising, and may well also be workable with steam atomization. Then the propane would generally only be used for startup of the kerosene burner, switching to superheated steam after things are warmed up.

Noise is a main issue for me, the weed burner I currently use is the source of noise that I would like to eliminate. I have a set of cast iron atmospheric gas burners from a home heating furnace that could be converted to Propane. These are silent, but Propane is the most expensive fuel I can buy.

I don't think I have any photos at the moment and the boat is in storage. I will take a look in the files and see if anything pops up.

Farmerden, Steam Queen looks like a very fine boat, very much in the style I am thinking of. Who's design is it?

Other oils are a good plan, no I had not thought of this. Are you using a vapourising, atomising (pressure jet), or "pot" burner?

I have been doing some computation, looking at the relative costs of Steam Coal and d-iesel - and I get a result (based on quoted calorific values) of 3:1 (coal being the cheaper! ...

I have yet to buy any oil. I've burned d-iesal with water in it [it was easy to separate the water out as water sinks ]I got three 45 gal drums of it free I've burned used car oil [I just run it thru a automobile oil filter to take out the lumps!]

I guess I'm lucky to live in Coal Country. Good Black Diamond Coal around here is $100 a ton, that's a LOT of steaming!

Malcolm- The "Steam Queen" is based on Weston Farmers' "Diana" I think plans are still available. She was built in Sidney BC by Peter London and the cabin was built by Paul Gartside. She burns wood or uses an atomizing burner. Den

Speaking of Diana launches, I have a 50" long by 13" beam fiberglass hull and deck for building a model Diana. Includes two props and a prop shaft. Also a Stuart launch twin and feed water pump for the same hull.

I will never get around to doing anything with this stuff. Open for trades.
