Hi,

I saw this as well. I was not sure what to make of the boiler however. How do you know you arent buying a worn out firetube boiler ?

If the engine runs, it is worth 3 times the total price! The boiler may also be OK - but as Semple boilers had the tubes WELDED (not rolled) in, it's hard to replace tubes.

I see this auction has ended without reaching the reserve. However, for my own information, can someone tell me if this is a compound, or a double-simple engine? Thanks very much.

That's a compound. 3"&5"x4" They are pretty well built engines, rated at about 10 hp, usually run pretty quietly (ball or roller bearings on crank and *i believe* wrist pins)

I ran the one that was in my friend's boat (traitor went to a Hicks due to "Kitchen Pressure" :? ) many times. The only down side that I experienced was the slip eccentric, in combination with the un-balanced slide valves, it can make for some very interesting maneuvering. John Nobel of Ranel II had converted his Semple V to Stephenson link reverse gear and it worked VERY well.
