Steam in Gdansk

Post by nick@gdansk »

Hi, my name is Nick and I am living in Gdansk & have been since I arrived 3 years ago on my 50 year old Scottish 'MFV' Incentive.

At that time I was invited to take part in & attend the cities third 'old timers' boat festival & was made to feel so welcome, enjoying myself so much I decided to stay !

The city & historic port of Gdansk is very much supporting the revival of maritime heritage on its waterways, having last year undertaken a project to restore an important wooden sailing vessel the 'General Zaruski' http://zaruski.pl/

It is my dream to re-introduce the beauty of steam to Gdansk as sadly to these waterways, once packed with all manner of steam boats & ships, steam is but a memory.

I have contacted (& joined although membership was lost in the post so needs to be re-submitted) the S.B.A. and although I have many years of experience in boating I am still very much a novice when it comes to steam, so if anybody out there is interested in my project please feel free to post your comment, help or support !

The city has its bi-annual old timers boat festival the last week of August & I have asked the S.B.A. if any of their members may be interested in trailing a boat as the cities guest, hopefully creating the spark that may get the fire of enthusiasm lit for our own boat here in this wonderful old port, however, understandably due to the distances involved & other events scheduled at the same time,
we have had no takers.

I (& the city) am still very keen to invite anyone enthusiastic about steam in Gdansk, to come & take part in our festival & as such the city has offered to pay the travel cost & find accommodation for anyone willing to make the trip in return for making a short presentation to the guests & officials at the Maritime Museum here as part of the program

If anyone is interested please let me know & wach this space for more news from Gdansk :crank !

Kind regards to all Nick

Some other groups you might want to invite are:

Deutscher Dampfboot Verein: http://www.dampfboot.de/
Amateurs de Bateaux a Vapeur http://www.association-abv.com/
Sveriges Angbat Forening http://www.steamboatassociation.se/

All of the above have fairly active memberships with operating boats of varying sizes.

You might also check out "The Hobby Steamboaters Web Ring", http://www.steamboaterswebring.net - good listing of steamboats worldwide as well as organizations. There's a group in Holland http://www.stoomvaart.nl/ and another in Finland http://www.steamship.fi/ that might be interested.
