Lentz double compound engine + boiler+ boat for sale

Post by Bert Blik »

Found this on the Dutch equivalent of E-bay called " Marktplaats". This looks like a really impressive project for someone to finish. A 12 mtr long steel boat with a " Lentz double compound engine and Scotch boiler.

Tried calling the chap but haven't been able to get through to him so haven't got a clue what he's asking for it
Just in case any brave steam boaters want to call from outside the Netherlands the country code for Holland is 31

It would be nice to see this engine up and running during an S.B.A rally

Looks like a steel lifeboat conversion of some kind.

Good evening,

Very nice triple expansion engine. I especially love those camshaft operated poppet valves.

As for the hull, it looks like it's a new one.

This will be a very impressive steamboat.

Have in the mean time had a talk with the son of the owner. Unfortunately he doesn't speak any English . He wouldn't give me an asking price but as far as I can tell he doesn't want top end price for it. The engine stands about a meter and a half high and the boiler has a diameter of 98 cm and a length of 127 cm

The engine is not a triple expansion engine but a Lentz valve engine which entails two 180 degree compounds coupled together at 90 degrees , enabling self starting
On these engines the exhaust steam from the bottom side of the high pressure cylinder flows straight to the top side of the low pressure cylinder passing through a single valve thus eliminating a receiver .

Thanks for the information about the engine. I took a better look at the pics: it clearly is a 4 cylinder arrangement with 2 identical compound engines set 90° apart.

Yep, it is a Lentz twin compound valvemachine. I was so fortunate to be able and buy the complete set from the previous owner.
It is the only one excisting in this size and made with incredible craftmenship. I am planning to complete it and build it in a former steamboat.
I spent nearly half a year to figure out how and why it works and have started to collect the missing parts.
I am planning to have the engine running in the spring of 2016 but it will take some sweat...

Very glad this fascinating engine has ended up in the hands of fellow steamboat man. I first saw it on 'Marktplaats" but I didn't have use for it as my boat is to small for such a sizable engine and boiler. Would love to see that up and running.
I know how smooth the full sized examples of these engine run in the " Dockyard" series steam tugs .
Congratulation on buying the engine and boiler and I hope I we get to see it running in the ( near ) future.

Fixed the link but looks like the listing has come down. Anyway, congratulations on the engine!
