Dear Steamboating Colleagues

I am looking for an axle (1") driven feed pump to supply my John Winn vee twin (2.25" X 2.125" each) engine that will run between 300 and 400 rpm. John used the original pump (pictured below) elsewhere. I bought a Hypro pump to replace it, but have been advised that it would need gearing up to supply enough water. I don't fancy the amount of noise that would probably yield, so it looks as if I should go back to shaft driven.

Does anybody have anything sitting gathering dust that might be suitable? (Yes, I am sure I could knock one up, but that takes time which is what I don't have.) I guess this had better be addressed to UK Forum Members given the cost of shipping and import duty.



I am also looking for a condenser pump and Windermere Kettle, should anybody have any observations.

Several people on the forum have sped up Hypro pumps with a belt drive using one of those segmented V-belts that make it possible to get the belt on and off without taking a bunch of stuff apart each time. They will certainly take the power. I use them on my drill press and a variable speed drive for my large and heavy band saw. They are smooth and silent.

Whether the Hypro will make noise itself, I cannot tell you. You do need to use a good filter on the intake of your Hypro. They don't handle debris well.

Kapanui has a hypro twin that is twin vee belt driven off the back of the engine coupling. The engine is a 30IHP Simspon Strickland compound (4 1/2 + 9 * 5 1/2) running at almost 400rpm. If I recall rightly, the pump runs slightly faster than the engine, but i'd have to measure the pulleys to know the exact ratio. Its tucked away below the floor, and you can't hear it at all. If you've got the pump, i'd work out a way to belt drive it. I can take some measurements and get more details if you would like.

Many thanks for the advice. I will look into the segmented belts and the appropriate pulleys. That would be the quickest way to go, especially if they run nice and quiet.

PS Thinking about the shaft drive pump has made me sit down and draw it. That was a useful exercise and I can see how easy it would be to make if the worst comes to the worst.

I ran some simple calculations on your motor and possible Hypro pump. As always, there are many assumptions and, as they say in the automobile advertisements, "Your mileage may vary."

Given a small Hypro (#5320 series) at 400 rpm (direct drive) gives .52 g.p.m. This is a fairly trustworthy calculation. Now comes that less solid ground!

Given your engine at 100 p.s.i., 400 r.p.m., and reasonable installation (pipe lagging, etc.) I'm getting a consumption number around .24 g.p.m. It seems as though you might have reason to expect it to work with as much as a 50% bypass at the hot well float.

Perhaps someone with more experience like Ron (cough, cough) might run some numbers and see if I've divided by zero or something doltish like that.

I haven't a spare boiler feed pump, but there was a condenser pump on the Stuart 6A when I bought it that I don't think I'll ever be using. There ia also a condenser. If you are interested, please let me know.

Anyone who knows more about this than I do. Hmm. That doesn't narrow it down much, does it?

I think he was referring to Ron Fossum (Artemis) whom he knows personally, not you Ron.

Actually, I was taking a dig at Artemis Ron to get him to stop lurking and chime in. But I'll take input from any Ron.
