Stuart Turner 6A - Mods & Upgrades

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Stuart Turner 6A - Mods & Upgrades

Post by RMB5241 »

Hello All - Yes, I am new around here........ :)

I am about to embark upon the construction of a Stuart Turner 6A having acquired the standard castings and plans. My previous steam experience has been with railway locomotives - both model and full size ex-BR preservation.

I have seen various references on here, in adverts and in the steamboating press to modifications, improvements and upgrades to this design and my question is............."Is there a single source documentation of tried and tested mods anywhere?"

Failing that, is there a friendly Guru who might assist? :ugeek:

Any suggestions (other than using the Stuart castings as ballast and buying a Supersteam Mk25 from you!) gratefully received.

Eventually I shall be looking for trailable 18' - 21' hull to put it in - so don't throw it away yet............ ;)

Robin,

The 6a suffers mainly from being too short in height and therefore having too short conn rods and eccentric rods, As far as I know the mods best suited were by Alex Ritchie, sadly no longer with us. Assuming you are in the SBA? the best contact for info on Alex mods would be Richard Havard, failing that give me a call/e-mail.
Regards
Jack

Jack,

Thanks for the response.

I am in the process of joining SBA - sent my five gold bars off last week and just waiting for response. Once that is formalised I will make contact with Richard and/or your good self.

Aware of the general thoughts on this motor but can't look a gift horse etc..............the castings came my way FOC ! My problem will be getting my mind round 2" bores rather than 2' ! :o

I know a gentleman who, buy use of spacers, made the 6a taller and machined his own longer con-rods.

Hi Robin

A friend of mine recently redesigned a 6A into a taller engine with 6 turned columns and changed all measures from imperial to mm.

He did it the old fashioned way - paper and pencil - but I am sure that he has made a very accurate design.

If you are interested, I might be able to talk a set of drawings out of him!

Best regards
Jørgen

Hi Robin

I made an agreament with him today. We will go to my workplace and try to scan them next week. They will be PDF files.

I will need your mail adress to post them directly to your mail box. Have you any idea how much attachment your mailbox can handle?

Best regards
Jørgen

That's great Jorgen. My email is rmb5241@hotmail.com and there should be no problem with pdf size.

Many thanks

Robin

I have tried for months to get some missing pages from 6a drawings from Stuart. I dont want you to be overwhelmed with requests but I am in need of these drawings also. PDF would be great. So Please post them up to the forum and tell us where they are.
Thanks
