We lost the Suwanee..

For those of you that keep up with surviving steamboats in different parts of the world. I was grieved somewhat to learn that the beloved steamer Suwanee at the Henry Ford Museum/ Greenfield village in Dearborn, Mi. was lost last winter. Taken apart board by board and scrapped. Nobody knows why for certain, it stopped running in about 2004, and was simply docked and displayed. The first reason I heard was insurance costs and that is probably accurate.

For a good part of my childhood we lived in earshot of the old steamer, I can still remember the sound of her whistles. Luckily, I went to the Village last year and seen her one last time. I've ridden it several times over the years, and she was probably the most important factor of my interest in steamboats today.

I think I may have the last running (well almost) steamboat in the area. One of the two Bob-lo boats is gone (Columbia) (Went to Cleveland, OH I think) and the other (St Claire, Docked in the Detroit river) has had her running gear removed and her future is uncertain. I know of no other steamboats in the area. Kind of strange to think.

What a shame

Find out which scrapper got the machinery and try to save what you can.
