A nice little barn find. 3" bore X 4" stroke, Stephenson valve. The fly ball governor is a little out of place but cute. A belt to the governor would make it difficult to operate the reversing lever. Turns on air, needs a good cleaning, the piping is a little funky too. The lubricator is patent dated 1863, well proceeding the build date of the engine. Haven't found any other marks yet. Does not have an integral thrust bearing nor a flange for a propeller shaft so maybe not a marine engine but rather a hobby project.

Nice little mill engine, a great find. Many of these had governors, most likely on sort of machine that reversed occasionally.

Interesting the stepped Stevenson gear. The gear is used for the rough setup and the governor provides for the fine-tuning.

Beautiful find Chris.
Did you find it locally? It looks like many of the parts are nickel plated?
I wouldn't think an integral thrust bearing would completely preclude marine use.

I agree about the thrust bearing. My current boat has a remote thrust bearing.
