Hi Folks
I thought I would 'corrupt' this section of the site with a vaguely steamboating related photo, and then leave you to guess what it is.
Mike Rometer knows as it was his idea, but my hand had the execution of it.
Hope a good summer is being had by all. Gales and rain with 12 degrees C in this part of Wales at the moment.

For bearings the wrong thing to do is dunk them when still warm from the journey, the cold water will contract them and any air inside, drawing in water.

Having a lightweight 18 footer , I do not even have to put the trailer wheels in the water. The boat is on a launching tolley then on the road trailer.

SOMEWHERE along the way I read of a fellow drilling a SMALL hole through the back side of the stub axles, connecting a nylon flex line to that and thence to a REGULATED air source, ie a small tank on the trailer. When launching he would pressurize the bearing housings with the air, only a pound or so, NOT enough to blow the caps or seals off. Sounds like a good idea.... but I'm too lazy! rp

The Bearing Buddy hub caps that I use are spring loaded thus they take care of any shrinkage when warm hubs hit cold water.
A larger issue is for me to remember to pump some grease in there just before launching. The little spring loaded washer that pushes on the grease has usually relaxed all the way between steaming occasions and in the fuss and hurry of getting the boat ready to back down the ramp it is all too easy for me to space out on the grease gun drill.
I think that picture is of some primordial lighting system for land navigation.
