Twice I have tried alternate fuels. And I'm not shy about using my plumber's torch to start the fire.

Once, during the shake down stages of owning Folly, I ran low on wood with perhaps a mile to reach the dock. I discovered an ancient tube of 5200 caulk in my tool box. In it went. After a slow beginning it caught with a vengence such that I had to steam about for a few minutes before tying up.

More recently I was on a longer cruise and watching my fir consumption closely when I happened upon a biscuit cut off of the end of a creosote piling. Some quick surgery reduced it to bits that would pass the firebox door. If there is a 'Winter Nationals' of steam launch drag racing, I know what fuel I will choose!

In both cases the wind was abeam. The stench was still evil. Except for that third eye growing out of my forehead I see to have survived well.
