found an interesting video today regarding what actually happens inside, and how the amount of TDS (total dissolved solids) affect water level as well as boiler feed water.
its two parts. Part 2 is the most interesting
dont know if this is old news, but for me it was very interesting to watch (since im new) im also not sure if it applies to our (your, I dont have one yet) small plants that are only used regulary, however I suppose the same principles apply if used frequently.

Re: INTERESING VIDEO- boiler inside footage
Thank you, thank you. I have seen a few ancient still shots and one very old film of a locomotive boiler but nothing as good as this.
I suspect that few of our hobby boilers are forced as hard as those two. And it is good for the beginner to see that steam is completely clear. It's water droplets that look white.
Seeing how the boiler reacts to on-off feed water control confirms my experience with using an injector on the Shay locomotive. It all seemed very counter intuitive then. With my boat system of a hot well float control, I've not seen any of that stuff.
Thanks again.
