I am really looking forward to reading your novel Alissa. If your quest for detail is any indication, you will be held in high regard with the steam crowd along with Richard McKenna.

What part of Canada do you hail from?

You can find 1000+ pictures of small steam launches in my register:

Most of them are beauties but no amazon work horses - but you can get an impression of the steam set up and the space available for people and fuel.
