I have a sneaking suspicion that the chain saw bar oils are really way oil marketed without the hype and thus are much less expensive. It would be hard to imagine a much more difficult environment than a chain saw. Wet, dirty and abrasive. Certainly there are few places in the developed world far from a vendor of bar oil.

Also, our little engines are under such low stress that we probably can get away with murder.

The biggest problem Ii have with sticky and fairly high viscosity oils is that they don't form drops very well in the sight glass of my drip type oilers. They tend to flow around corners and thus I turn the screw out too far and oil goes everywhere. Time for some cleaning I suspect.
