Hello all
I have been lurking on here for a couple of months and decided to take the plunge. I’m using the screen name dump valve because it reminds me of my first watch on a steam ship after getting my marine engineering license. The off going engineer had shown me the controller for the dump valve but I was so new, its function did not register right away. In port, even with small “port tips” in the burners, if the load on the boiler was low, the system would cut back the fuel pressure enough that the boiler would start to smoke a bit. Opening up the dump valve and sending steam to the condenser would put more load on the boiler and keep the burner pressure up eliminating the smoking. Never forgot the dump valve after that night.
No boat as of yet, but looking into the Selway-rose. Really like the Isambard that Ian Richardson built. Although I have years of experience with “big iron”, I am still a neophyte concerning reciprocal engines and the intricacies of these elegant small systems.
Thank you for accepting my request to join your group.

Welcome to the forum. It isn't as busy as its heyday, but there are those still wandering on her, and there is heaps of information from previous conversations.
Not being familiar with automated burner systems I hadn't thought of tricking the system by opening your own controlled steam leak (other than running the main engine).
