Re: Boiler advice
Thanks Scotty, More than happy to wait a bit - not like my boat is going anywhere at the moment.. I had similar thoughts on potential problems with a non condensing loco boiler as my boat operates in salt water, in addition to needing to store lots of wood or coal. As others have also suggested my p...

Re: Boiler advice
Hi Guys, My project is still ticking along despite some reasonably ordinary weather - cant wait till the roof is on my cabin. I'm aiming to have her back in the water, albeit still running her diesel by the end of the year. I'm also trying to nail down my options for a boiler, with a view to buildin...

Re: The Funnel?
Has anyone appreciated the irony of a steam boat enthusiast complaining about paper based publications on the Internet

Worthington pumps
Hi all,
I saw a Worthington pump the other day with 76x45x76 on the maker's plate.
I'm assuming this is an indicator to its capacity?
I couldn't see inside it but it looks like the piston rods and associated bits are all brass so I'm assuming it was for pumping water.

Re: Boiler advice
Thanks Greg, Thats sage advice on the boiler and I'm going to take it :) Yes it's a big project for a first timer, I never intended for it to be so. I have had the boat since I was at university and literally saved her from the breaker's yard. She is 110 years old and was originally a steam launch. ...

Re: Boiler advice
As I stated earlier I'm relatively new to this so please forgive me for any obvious or otherwise silly questions, or confusion I may create :) Yes my engine is a twin cylinder double acting engine with a bore of four inches and a stroke that's the same. My rough calculations show it is capable of de...

Re: Boiler advice
Thanks for your thoughts guys. The boat would weigh around 5-6t. I could fit a horizontal boiler that came in around 5ft. I do like the idea of a Scotch boiler but I suspect I'd struggle to find one out here, and at what cost :( She also has room for a fairly large holding tank, I've one at holds 50...

Boiler advice
Hi Everyone. I'm fairly new to steam but have been pottering around in timber boats since I was a kid. My present project is the restoration of my 110yo steam yacht Avalon. She is 40ft x 8ft x 3ft draught. On top of all the other work to be done I'm returning her to steam. To this end I have a very ...

Re: Bottom prep advise on Steel Hulled Steamboat
While new to steam I've had heaps of experience with epoxy and steel boats. Others have made the point re anti foul and fresh water, but if it were me I'd sand the entire hull below the water line to remove the anti foul - with the right safety gear, but don't go through the two pack epoxy. Then I w...
