Re: first boiler fire-up

I can't post pictures because my camera broke and I used the wife's iPad to take them. The file size is too large to load and i'm not computer savvy enough to shrink them. I posted video on my facebook page....David Koski. Arbor Vitae Wisconsin. Just lit the boiler for the second time and ran it up ...

first boiler fire-up

After eight years of effort, I fired the boiler in the 20' Paul Gartside designed steam pinnace last Sunday. The lunkheimer whistle was functional beginning at 35 psi (a hunting buddy originally found it on the shoulder of a highway.) Tried the engine at 45 psi and it ran smooth as a watch in both f...

flexible shaft coupler

I am currently fitting the propshaft and thought I would use a flexible coupler to compensate for any slight misalignment. I've seen several boats with donut couplers and that appears to be a good solution with good tolerance of misalignment and high torque ratings but they seem extremely overpriced...

Steering system

I am about to order the steering system for my launch under construction and had planned to use a SeaStar (formerly Teleflex) system. I have had problems getting tech support from them and was wondering which system would be most appropriate. They insist that only a hydraulic system will work and I ...

boiler plumbing

I installed the boiler on it's bedding last week and am about to start the plumbing. As I have never done this before I have more than a few questions. The Wisconsin Historical Steam Engine Association is putting on a steam school at the end of the month and I hope to attend and pick up some assista...

Re: boiler mounting

I think I have it now. I found an aluminum pan used for protecting floors from water heater leaks. It is just the right size to sit beneath the boiler. i intend to set it on top ot the bedding planks with stainless hanger bolts protruding through it. I will then set 1x2x2 heavy steel square tubing s...

Re: Signal/Deck gun

There was a company importing bronze swivel gun, naval cannon and lantaka barrels that was located in Florida. Don't know if they're still around. Hern Iron Works in Idaho also had some small barrels that would be appropriate for this use and replicas of the old Winchester 10 and 12 gauge signalling...
