Engine of Elpenor, looking down the cam shaft which runs vertically from the very top of the engine to the bottom. This is a uniflow enigne with poppet valves operated by the rotating cam shaft. This boat is called Tenacity. Although it is not in the usual steam boat style, it is usually a popular boat when the traditional Lake District monsoon arrives. I was once on this boat, 11pm, in the pitch black with the most amazing lightning storm over head and a boiler which refused to go above 50 psi. It took 2 hours to go 5 miles. Mudlark. A short and beamy boat but with full living quarters complete with central heating. David Harding is well known for attending many SBA rallies with Mudlark, which he has owned since 1976. Sulvien, built by Geoff Newton. Rosie the dalmation was notorious when food was about. After cooking a nice jucy steak on the fire, Geoff's back was turned for less than a second. Elpenor again, this time a stunning photo of the boat its self. Moored up on Windermere at the Motor Boat Club in August 2007. The bucket in the water is there to hold the boat off the jetty at night while David sleeps in the cabin. Tim however is much more sensible and sleeps in a tent. (Photo by Simon Maltby)

The burner from Oberon. This is a LIFU burner powering a LIFU boiler with a LIFU engine. It has been known to pass water skiers in the past. If steam had continued to be developed beyond the early 1900's when this technology was foremost, who knows what they would have achieved. More on Oberon from the SBA website.
