Member's Steamboats - A Simple List for All

Post by fredrosse » Sun Nov 25, 2012 7:14 pm

Thought it would be a good idea to provide a single post boat informal description with a small (under 250K, directly added to the post) picture for each member's boat. If possible this should be sortable, but that is well beyond my computer skills.

Boat Name, Owner, Location

Basic Hull: Hull Type, Length, Beam, Depth, and Draft, Displacement, Construction Materials, Year built

Steam Plant: Boiler Type & Size, Fuel Type, Some Details

Engine: Type, Bore & Stroke, Number of Cylinders, Some Details

Propulsion: Speed, Revolutions per Minute, Wheel Dimensions (Diameter, Pitch, No. of Blades)

"Wayward Belle"

She was designed and built by Mr. William Charles Grosjean of Poway, California (near San Diego). Mr. Grosjean designed every aspect of this boat; he also made the patterns, boiler, controls, and engine himself.

The hull is a Chesapeake Bay style open launch, 22'-2" X 5'-10" X 1'-5". Sitka spruce frames and stringers. Honduras mahogany stem, keel, floor timbers and engine bearers. Bruynzeel plywood planking. Silicon bronze fastened and epoxy glued and sealed. Epoxy/fiberglass sheathed. Weight-850lbs

The engine is a 2" & 4" x 3.25" compound on six turned columns, stephenson link valve gear, piston valve on the high pressure piston, balanced slide vlave on the low pressure piston, independent valve gear adjustment on LP. Drip feed lubrication to bearings w/ oil slingers from main bearings to feed rod big-end bearings. Two feed pumps and two air pumps(condensate- 27in/vacuum when no leaks!) and one fuel pump dirven 1/4 engine speed ala Simpson Strickland style gear drive. approx 6BHP@700rpm. Weight-225lbs

The boiler is "once through" monotube, ASME approved design and materials. Natural draught, 21sq.ft./heating surface, 150psi, 450F, 200 lbs/hr. Controls similar principles to Doble "normalizer" control system. Vaporizing kerosene burner, modulated by steam pressure. Steam temperature controlled by quartz rod thermostat. Weight-220lbs

10 and 14 gallon fuel tanks, 3 gallon hot well, condenser: three 7/8" copper tubes 4.5' long.

Propeller- 15"x17" 3-blade

Steam Launch Jackie Lee

Owner/Assembler/Amateur - Jon Riley North Kingstown RI

Hull: 22 ft Tanzer Sailboat Hull - The keel had been cut out and the cabin/interior removed. I glassed in the hole and added a mahogany skeg.

Engine / Drive Train: Tiny Power M Single Side Crank. 3x4 Single, double acting with A Stephenson Gear reverse gear. 1.25 stainless prop shaft running through a bronze algonquin shaft log and stuffing box turning a 18x18 bronze three blade prop.

Steering: Original sailboat rudder attached to a teleflex side steering mechanism, with the original tiller available for steering from the stern.

Boiler: 60 sq ft water tube with iron steam and mud drums and stainless steel tubes. The steam line, safety, and whistle etc are attached to a steam dome on the top of the steam drum. The water gauge is a reflex gauge, and there is a single try cock mid steam drum. The boiler was built by LeRoy Metzinger in Seattle and was originally intended for a steamboat in British Columbia. Unfortunaltely that builder passed away before he was able to complete the project. The stack is double walled and the boiler sides are insulated.

Water System: The hot well is a stainless steel tank that was formerly used in a plating operation. It holds about 3 gallons. The water pump is a hypro run via a V belt off a pully on the crankshaft. It is being replaced by a Southworth Steam Pump to allow for water movement without running the engine.

Exhaust - Straight dump thru the side (non condensing) this season to get in the water quickly. Onboard condenser is being installed over the winter. It consists of 50 ft of stainless tubing contained in 6" PVC pipe with sea water for cooling supplied via an electric pump.

This winter will be spent trying to make it less of an eyesore.

I am getting this message when I try to upload a picture :

"Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached"

Any ideas ?

Steam Queen was the dream of George Doughty. After he died in 1991 the boat sat in a leanto til I bought her in 2004.I'm proud to be the "keeper" of her and love Steaming around the Gulf Islands of the Pacific Northwest in Canada.Complete with Head, kichen, and sleeping quarters -a little cosy and definately no chocolate on the pillow at night so maybe only a two star rating!! LOL

She is 25ft with a beam of 7 ft and a draught of 2ft
Made of carvel planked yellow cedar
Engine built by George Doughty is a compound 2.75"X5"X4". Boiler is a Roberts type with a heating surface of 40 sq.ft.

The base of Emma is an old riveted steam hull. All woodworking, engine and boiler building was done by myself. You will find some more info about Emma at my steam boat page:

I hesitate to post my boat's info as it's not steam powered (Atlas Imperial, de'sel). What do you guys think.
