Hi Nick
Another thought for you. If you look at the SBA website (I imagine that you will have joined up by now!), and go to the Steamboat Register and do an Advanced search with the ST 5A as the search parameter. As always you may need to play about with the fine detail of the parameter, but it will eventually give you a listing of all the boats powered by that engine. You can then get a feel for what folk have done before not to mention a feel for the style of boilers used.
Of course the alternative is to put in the hull size and see what comes back.

That's jolly good advice. Senta certainly performs nicely on Windermere with a 5A in a Flying Dutchman (racing sailing dinghy) hull, burning wood in a VFT boiler.PeteThePen1 wrote:Hi Nick

The other way to look at a 5A is the amount of power available is about the same as two normal people rowing moderately hard (or maybe one olympic oarsman), and you might be able to guess the perfomance adequately from that.

The Javelin is a nice looking hull, I assume you have the iron keel version. Similar weight and dimensions to Drascombe Dabber. Much encouraged that I have good chance of making a successful boat, probably with a different prop. Thanks

Thanks for the book recommendation. I have Vol 3 on order from a UK bookshop that had it in stock. How many volumes were there? Have I got the right volume?

So I need to find a friend or an Olympic rower to do a trial! It’s encouraging that others have success with the ST 5a. The Flying Dutchman is a planing hull, while the Drascombe is a displacement hull. So, no chance of hoping on top of the wave to gain higher speeds with the Dabber.

Not made much progress with the steamboat. It has been as low as -6 oC in the workshop! The situation at present is that I have hull and engine. On the look out for a prop with larger pitch than the one I have.
The last big item is a boiler, which has got me doing layouts. I realised that I have never fully considered where everything goes.
The position of the engine is fixed within limits at the end of the stern tube. But I need to stoke the boiler from a coal store, control the engine (reverse lever actually on Stuart 5a) with the regulator, have sight of water level and control water feed. Also access items such as blower and whistle. Plus steer the boat by tiller or wheel. Preferably without leaving my seat.
Everything has to be positioned so the hull remains level and stable.
What have I left out?

Probably not a means of having an onboard hot tub.
Is it for use with a condenser? My thinking at present is top keep things simple and not condense of this time. It might be a good idea to leave appropriate space if I decide to retro fit a condenser.

yes a hot well is for the returning hot water from a condenser. Mine is too small I need to make a better one, but I think I will do without the airpump , which is the one that draw the water/air mix from the condenser. By puffing ie exhust steam up the funnel then you can get a good blast on the fire.
