Stepping off the Christmas juggernaught?

Post by PeteThePen1 » Mon Dec 21, 2015 3:03 pm

So what do sub-urban steamboaters do when the pressure of Christmas preparation gets too much?

How about a bit of boat manouvering on sloping drives in the rain...

First one needs something on which to 'park' said boat:

Now we begin to move it down the slope towards the garage...

Safety rope in case of runaway

Out of the drive and time to block the traffic

So, how do we get it back up the slope...?

Three cheers for the electric winch (Yes Coniston's algae just love brass!)

Onto the trolley and start tidying up.

Better tidy up that trailer too

(With many thanks to Mike Rometer who made it all possible. Out of focus pics are all my own work)

No more excuses about not being able to work on the boat because it is raining. Funnily enough now the job is done the sky is cloudless and the sun bright. Perhaps I have a personal (steamboat) cloud.

Season's Greeting to you all

Funny how rain doesn't show on photos, looks just mildly damp!

Which reminds me, I better get the waterproofs out of the car.

Is that arch strong enough to lift your boat? How much does your boat weigh. Do you use straps?

I need to do this as my old trailer is shedding bits and I need to either seriously rebuild it or get a new one. Either plan involves getting Folly off the trailer and on to a cradle.

The gantry is only intended for boiler/engine lifting, I don't think we'd attempt the whole boat on it.

You don't need a sky hook; patience is required, though.

In the Philadelphia area it will be 76F (24.5C) on Christmas Day! Nothing close to this in my memory, usually snow in the ground and temperatures below freezing this time of year. Fortunately I have not yet laid up the Margaret S, so off to the Delaware River tomorrow morning for some Christmas Steaming.

Sounds wonderful Fred!

Here in Little England, it is 8.5C outside and the rain has just stopped, while the garage is a reasonable 10C, but as lead chef, my role is wholly domestic today. We have 19C indoors, the log stove is doing nicely and a rosy glow has descended upon the family, while the turkey has been reduced to debris.

I am tempted to suggest the rest of the team take a walk outdoors while I either clear up and wash up or perhaps just have a snooze. A gift of 'Norwegian Wood' by Lars Mytting is also a pull, though it may have to wait until later. Apparently it is a best seller in the UK this year to the amazement of the critics.

Hope that you have all enjoyed as pleasant a Holiday as I have.

Regards

Pete
