Chevron W680 as cylinder oil?

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Chevron W680 as cylinder oil?

Post by TriangleTom » Fri Jun 23, 2017 2:39 am

Has anybody experimented with Chevron W680 or any other similar products for cylinder lubrication? It's intended for use in environments up to 300 PSI steam pressure and up to 575 F, and the price is pretty good at ~$90 for a 5 gallon bucket.

Harry Wade has a page on "The Truth About Steam Oils"
http://www.southernsteamtrains.com/misc ... -hwade.htm

Looks like it would be a decent if not very good. In fact I might look into one of these.

Green Velvet is what I've used, but I find it a little pricey. Your Chevron says its a Straight mineral oil with 4-6% tallow/animal fat, which is what you want if you are running according to the conventional type steam cylinder oils.

Lubrication is one of those things that can get "religious", even Wade mentions it, "In most things I am a proponent (within reason) of going with what works for YOU"

I'd skip the Cheron W-220 and go for the W-460 or W-680 personally if you tried it.

Not generally. Compounded oils are difficult to recover.
