leaking tubes fire tube boiler.

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

leaking tubes fire tube boiler.

Post by wsmcycle » Tue Mar 12, 2024 8:54 pm

The boiler mfg# 75380 , built in 2005 has started leaking around some of the tubes.
The boiler powers a 1913 Navy model "K" steam engine in a 33foot boat. It has been stored the past 3 years. I live in Fort Smith Arkansas "True Grit" and operate the boat on the Arkansas River.
I am looking for some place that can repair the boiler. Does someone know of a place? I have it strapped to a pallet and ready to ship.
Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest re-rolling the fire tubes yourself. With the boiler on its side on a pallet, that process becomes relatively easy to do.
Are they leaking at the top tube sheet or the bottom tube sheet?

Of course, a thorough survey of the boiler condition should be done first, in case something more egregious is discovered.
For example, too aggressive a water treatment program can erode the tubes (and more) leading to leaking.

My thoughts.

-When has the last hydraulic test been done on the boiler and to what pressure?
-Where are they leaking?
-What are you using for boiler water treatment?
-What are you using for fuel?
-Has the boiler been run with low water? If so, how low and how long?
-Any photos of tubes/tube sheet on fire and water sides?

Can try Jonas Stutzman in Ohio (Amish and no website that I know of. Seen his work first hand and it's quite good):

Since you have a modern boiler, I see no need to go to a specialist boiler maker. A quick search found Mid South Boiler in Van Buren, AR. https://www.midsouthboiler.com/services/ They advertise tube replacement, etc., and if their advertising is honest, should be able to perform any repairs needed.
It was not easy to convince Allnutt. All his shop training had given him a profound prejudice against inexact work, experimental work, hit-or-miss work.
