Pointless destruction - that's what it is. The purpose of art is to expound the transcendentals of goodness, truth and beauty. This is yet another example of "art" which is designed to draw attention to itself by means of shock. This isn't real art. It's a form of exploitation by means of shocking the viewer.

Seriously, a well-kept steamboat, which shows care and dedication is more a true form of art expressed than this sort of trite rubbish.

Many many steam boats and steam launches have sunk in the past like other vessels. Art is not fixed. It's in the eye of the beholder and there is no fixed criteria. I don't think it's fair to condemn "Art" that quickly. Most famous Artists died broke and were acknowledged for their work decades later. Sure steam launches are fairly rare now days. Whatever your political persuasions are if they bought the launch or had permission to do so, that's their thing. In 50 years should folks be complaining that someone is doing something similar with a small 2 stroke gasoline outboard launch?

If it was a live art event and the pictures are all that is left I don't like the "Art" myself - but I'm defending the principle.

Well, let's really have some fun: Whose art is the most representational? Leonardo daVinci or a 6 year old child (either sex).

Depends if you are the parent of the 6 year old child or not.

I also cannot see this as art but as with most media reporting we have almost no facts to go on. Was the boat rotten and about to be burnt?
The one thing i learnt from my time as jury member was that the only people who know the whole story were there at the time.
As long as the machinely was recovered. Wooden boats to a large degree have to be seen as having a limited lifespan.

Shame the artists wear life jackets.
It’s a bloody shame to destroy a nice boat like this.
If you search for Simon Starling on the internet you will find more about this idiot and the boat.
On you-tube there is an article in French.
