Re: Next Weekend II
Rainer,
I've grooved remetalled bearings for oil engines with a curved round tipped chisel and a 4 oz ballpein hammer. Not difficult when considering the curved surface. Those on the Danny's compounds were originally done the same way.
If you are going to mill them then an engraving type cutter will do just as well as a ball end.

Jack, steamboatjack wrote:An interesting engine, nice to see “proper” double bar marine links and I particularly like the cast eccentric rod ends. The distance between the eccentric rod ends on the link looks a little short, I would be interested to know the distance (relative to full valve travel) Loco people use about 2 x but all my old marine books state 3 x. Could you also comment on the crosshead pin bearing arrangement? Cannot see from the photos, always interested in different ideas.

Jack
I finally got around to measuring the Doty. 1.75" for the valve travel and 5" between eccentric rod ends. That comes out to about 2.86 x. I think they look unusually close because many engines are needlessly far apart.
I have yet to get around to uncovering the Claparede and measuring, but I wanted you to know I have not forgotten.

Bronze sleeve for the condensate pump turned out of the old cutlass bearing we fought to remove:

Wes,
The engine is looking great. Good show on re-purposing the cutlass bearing, that would be an expensive piece of material.

Re: Next Weekend II
New cutlass bearing was installed with the help from a steam boater from Minnesota, then the freshly machined shaft installed with the help of a couple neighbors:
My father is doing the final fitting of the Dodge thrust bearing (using in addition to the engine's thrust bearing), before we remove the section of roof and install the machinery. Much easier to install things without machinery to crawl around!
