I have been watching David Richard's youtube channel which is about his line shaft driven steam powered machine shop.

He has setup up his shop to be outfitted as it might have been in the 1920s.

The lathes, shapers, mills run off wood, a large VFT and single cylinder steam engine.

Part of it is he wants the full experience (good and bad) of running this vintage of steam plant as a near daily experience.

From what he says he's either profitable or close to it.

I really find it inspiring.

Rebuilding a steam engine with steam power

At 48:20 in the video you see a pan from the exhaust going out the side of the shop to his steam engine running coupled to the line shaft on the ceilings to an adjacent room where a Metal Planar takes the power from the line shaft and is gang milling 4 steam engine cross slide bars.

David Richards put up a new video:

Steam Power to Remachine Steam Engine Parts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_-3DUVmJT8
The Lily steam engine cylinder head, slide valve and steam chest cover are remachined on a shaper, lathe and planer using only steam power in my 1925 line shaft, steam powered shop. I put this shop together, as you can follow on my older videos, to show how it would have been done in a time before municipal electric power, electrinic measuring, CNC, indexable tooling, etc. when set ups and machining operations required some thought.
