Maybe we are doing it wrong?

What a bunch of hype.

So what does it run on?? There was shot after shot of it running with no overhead lines. Was it some hybrid scheme where it could use electricity when it was available and fuel oil when not? There has never been any significant electrified rail mileage in the U.S. A fair bit on the P.R.R. and a short mountain run over the Cascade Mtns. in Washington State. The rest is urban mass transit stuff.

U.P. later built a couple of gas turbine units which yielded pennies on the dollar when they scrapped them after a short time. And earlier the N.Y.C., I think, built a steam turbine rod engine which, as predicted, was a fiasco. Turbines are pretty much a one speed thing and railroading is not.

Guess what? The informed naysayers are almost always right.

Yes, a bunch of scientists said that heavier than air flight was impossible but they were scientists not engineers like the Wright Brothers and, as usual, were massively ignorant of technological developments.

Huh?

It's a condensing steam turbine-electric serial hybrid. It has some flash boiler that gets up to pressure in 15 min. 5000HP, can do 80mph. 700 miles between fuel and water stops.

I think that's impressive.

But what is the energy source?

Oil.

They were withdrawn rather quickly, maintenance nightmare apparently.
