WANTED - BLACKSTAFFE BOILER PLANS

Post by Old Steamer » Sat May 19, 2018 5:32 pm

Does anybody have plans for a coal-fired Blackstaffe Boiler? I will be happy to reimburse the costs of copying and postage or outright purchase.

Hi

If you mean the Blackstaff Wood three drum boiler, rather than Blackstaff's vertical boiler, the plans are available from the SBA.

The downside is that those plans are just for the pressure vessel so one has to design one's own casing and take account in that of the combustion space required for the fuel one wishes to burn. If you are in the UK, I do have a set of plans for the 3 drum as well as a big bag full of the copper coils that the plans require. Being copper, the SBA regulations mean that you would be limited to a maximum pressure of 100psi. The latter could be for sale if you twist my arm.

I also have CAD drawings of what I felt was a suitable casing for the pressure vessel. If you are interested send me a PM and I will dig them out for you. My designs are free for sharing but come with no guarantees of fitness for purpose.

Regards

Pete

Yes, it's the 3-drum boiler and I'm aware that the SBA has plans but only of the pressure vessel. I can't use the parts you have as I already have the boiler and the pressure vessel is OK but the casing is U/S. Thus my intention is to combine the pressure vessel with a new casing but converting from paraffin to coal firing.

As regards the working pressure, whatever the SBA's attitude to new copper boilers, existing Blackstaffe's are passed for working at 150PSI and you will find numerous examples on the SBA website.

Thank you for the offer of drawings and I have replied by PM.
Regards,
OS

FYI for those in the US.....
ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code limits the use of copper tube and fittings to a maximum service temperatures of 400°F or less. Using a similar analysis as above, the absolute pressure at which saturated steam has a temperature of approximately 400°F is at 120 psig
120 psi absolute = ~105 psi gauge.

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code limit for copper and copper alloy boiler components is actually 406F, which corresponds to 250 PSIG saturated steam pressure.

This allows Brass/Bronze/Copper valves (IFF steam rated), Pressure gauges, sight glass fittings, etc. to be used up to that pressure.

My buddy uses copper for his Ofeldt boiler coils on one of his cars which he routinely runs at 400 psi and above. His steambike which did use a monotube of copper was routinely ran up to 700 psi, it has an Ofeldtish/Blackstaffish boiler now that sees these same pressures.

The bike has a little PM research 1.5 X 2? engine running at 1300 RPM. Per plan formula it's putting out around 2 horsepower, but the engine is rated at 1/4 hp.

Here he is running a time trial, shows him shutting it down after he crossed the timer.

I asked him once how much water it uses, he said about two miles per gallon, and it holds two gallons, which I replied "so you can go about four miles?" he replied "no, only two miles, you have to come back" :)

I posted a video on here its not showing up though?? It showed up in the preview? Something is up with the forum, may be a bandwidth issue.
