I pondered this once sat on in a steamboat over the middle of a very deep lake. My own steamboat Blue Buccaneer was build to include built in buoyancy tanks at either end.

i have a very similar boiler built by Mr Beaver . In mine the pressure vessel is copper with the tubes silver soldered in the the drum.

It can only be in decline if less people post items for sale there. You could try posting your items for sale there as well and double the number of potential buyers

I am used a stainless steel mesh rather than a solid sheet, it is holding up well , at a guess around 3 to 4 mm hole size. Do not worry about heat transfer via fixings. and I have used fire bricks for the lower part where the coal bed is.

hi its close but not quite right, the engine will be turning over to warm though. If you are not able to visit a steamboat in person have you looked at youtube , I know here are a few videos there that explain lighting up and warming the engine. look at
