"Item" relisted for only £2995. If I'd live nearer from the treacherous Albion, I'd definitely give it a try.

Re: Re-magnetizing a Bergen-Nautik Compass
Hi Mack,
Not 100% sure but I guess the liquid the dial floats in is glycerine.
Glycerine is used in manometers, I'd bet it's the same for compasses.
Regards.

Re: 1889 French Engine - Very odd
Wow, such a mesmerizing but also counter-efficient engine. => A French proverb says: " why should you do simple things when you could do complicated ones? " By the way, I'm French and I must admit that I laughed at your jokes. I even agreed to most of them, especially the one describing western Euro...

Re: A large globe valve used for a throttle
Thanks for the video, CB. Looking at those Corliss valve gears is mesmerizing.
I noticed something very unusual on such a large power plant, something that looks very much alike a reversing gear.

Good evening Dietrich,
Very nice & interesting boiler. What are the dimensions of its main drum (especially its wall thickness)? What are the test pressure and the working pressure?
Thank you in advance.

Re: Engine Id
Tractormanmike, Your engine doesn't look too badly pitted. It sure needs more than just a good TLC. A few missing parts (piston cover, stephenson reversing linkage, etc.) but nothing that can't be fabricated in a small home workshop. What are the bore & stroke? I agree with Bart about the estimated ...

Re: Propane-Air brazing torches
What is not apparent to me is why a crack of this size wasn't found during a hydro test. If I remember well my mechanical engineering courses back in College, temperature dramatically changes the level of stress. When you run a hydro-test at room temperature (something between 0 °C and 40 °C, for e...
